Blossoms (Race To The Finish) — Lyrics Breakdown

This song reflects on grief, time, mental health, and the feeling that life sometimes moves like a race we never agreed to run. Losing my mum sits at the centre of the emotions behind these lyrics, and a lot of the imagery revolves around trying to find meaning while still moving forward.

“44 and I’m facing my mortality / Losing mum put a dent in my sanity”

The song opens with a moment of honesty. At this stage in life, mortality starts to feel real. Losing my mum wasn’t just painful—it shifted the way I see life and the way I see myself.

“I’m watching everything that’s eroding my morality / I can’t let the devil get his hands on me”

Grief can pull you into darker thoughts or habits. This line is about recognising those moments and trying not to let negativity, anger or self-destruction take over.

“Slow down / I’ve got all the time but it’s running out”

This captures the strange feeling that time moves faster the older you get. You might technically have years ahead of you, but it suddenly feels like life is speeding up.

“I need to stop hiding when the sun is out”

When life gets heavy it’s easy to withdraw from the world. The “sun” represents life and opportunity, and this line is about wanting to step back into it instead of hiding from it.

“This ain’t part of the plan and was never what she taught me”

My mum believed in strength and perseverance. Feeling lost or stuck feels like drifting away from the values she tried to pass down.

“No sail no paddle but the eye water keeps flooding out”

This image describes feeling emotionally stranded. No sail, no paddle—no direction. And the tears just keep coming.

“It’s like I’m waiting for death cause after so much lose I’ve got no faith in my breath”

After losing people close to you, life can start to feel fragile. It’s less about wanting death and more about feeling disconnected from the certainty of being alive.

“I’m breaking my steps salty from the failure’s sweat”

“Salty” here represents both sweat and bitterness. It’s the exhaustion of trying to move forward while carrying the weight of past failures.

“Hearing sniggers from my demons as I face my regrets”

The “demons” are those internal voices that remind you of mistakes or missed opportunities. When you’re already struggling, those voices can get loud.

“But still I’m running / Chasing the bullet for the finish line”

Despite everything, the narrator keeps moving. The race metaphor continues here, suggesting life can feel like a sprint toward something inevitable.

“Take it back then put this gun up to my riddled mind”

This line reflects the chaos of intrusive thoughts. A “riddled mind” suggests a mind full of holes—worn down by anxiety, doubt, and pressure.

“My glasses cover up these bitter eyes / Wishing people really knew the truth hidden behind this fickle smile”

This speaks to masking emotions. From the outside everything might look fine, but internally there’s a lot happening that people don’t see.

“The starting pistol was a lie / But every stride I take is for the truth”

The starting pistol symbolises society’s expectations—what success should look like and when it should happen. Calling it a lie means rejecting that pressure and choosing to live more honestly.

“Mum told me there’s strength in when I cry / That’s why I pour my heart out in booth”

Music becomes therapy here. Instead of bottling emotions up, the recording booth becomes the place where they’re released.

“She always believed that I could fly / I tried to listen but I never saw the proof”

Parents often believe in our potential more than we do ourselves. This line reflects the struggle of trying to live up to that belief while dealing with self-doubt.

“Only thing keeping me grounded was my mind / I was scared of all the holes up in my suit”

This line uses space imagery. Flying represents chasing dreams, while the “holes in the suit” represent vulnerability or fear of failure. Staying grounded felt safer than risking exposure.

“Yet I’m calm when I stare up at space / The silence settles me”

Looking at the universe can bring perspective. In that quiet vastness, the noise of everyday life fades for a moment.

“I feel impervious to any kind of weaponry”

In that moment of perspective, the worries and pressures of the world feel smaller—almost powerless.

“Down here anxiety gets the best of me / Living in a world full of jealousy evil and greed”

But returning to everyday life brings the anxiety back. The world can feel heavy, competitive and full of negativity.

“Trying to figure my trajectory / Before depression really sets in me”

The space metaphor continues. “Trajectory” represents direction in life, and there’s urgency in figuring that out before depression takes hold.

“Accelerating my expectancy / still looking for where the pedals be”

This line reflects the pressure to move forward faster while still feeling unsure about how to control things. It’s like being in a vehicle that’s speeding up while you’re still trying to find the pedals.

Hook Meaning

“Racing toward something I never knew”

Life feels like a race, but the destination was never clearly explained.

“Sorry I can’t stay I’m passing through”

This line reflects the temporary nature of life. We’re all just passing through.

“Surround myself with people who are true”

After experiencing loss and reflection, authenticity becomes one of the most important things.

“I never knew this world could ever be so cruel”

Hard experiences reveal sides of life you might not have seen before.

“Distracted by the devil’s tricks and tool / we know better but we’re happy being fools”

This reflects how people often chase distractions—status, validation, ego—even when we know those things aren’t what really matter.

“That’s why you’ll find me always on the move”

Movement becomes survival. Staying still can sometimes mean getting stuck in negative thoughts.

“I wish I had some time to watch the blossoms bloom”

The blossoms represent life’s small beautiful moments. The tragedy is that while we’re racing through life, we don’t always stop long enough to appreciate them.

Overall message

The song sits somewhere between grief, reflection and perseverance. It’s about losing someone important, questioning the direction of life, and trying to keep moving forward while staying true to yourself.

Diligent Fingers ended 2024 with a full-length album called “War In Peace”. Alluding to the cyclone of mental and emotional dealings that so many people experience in silence, it was a powerful exclamation point to the year. Twelve months later, the renowned multihyphenate delivers part two of his “War” saga, “The War Within”. As alluded to in the title, this multi-genre collection of music examines the inner war that drum-n-bass’s most complex polymath wages with his demons, while acknowledging his muses and inspirations. It also gives us yet another glimpse into the eclectic creative energies that abound in the mind of the man who fuels Spynal Records, via his production skills, his shrewd choices in collaborators, his layered harmonies, and of course, his lyrical prowess.

“Cabin Fever” opens the album from the perspective of a human under attack by those aforementioned demons during a period of intense isolation. Originally released as a single in 2020, it is undoubtedly one of Dili’s most powerful pieces of lyrical work and an emotional cornerstone of the LP. From there, “The War Within” lyrically explores all the permutations of the album’s theme across a stunningly wide variety of musical textures. A sense of melancholy permeates the chilled 140 vibes of “Staring Out My Window”, featuring Man.Lyk.Ess, Big Gen, and Anya, and the minimalist downtempo of “Blossoms”, produced by the iconic Chris Inperspective. The highs and lows of love and romance are on the mind via the blunted lo-fi hip hop of “Here Alone”, the Rolaz-produced jazzy drum-n-bass of “When You Do That”, the quiet storm half-time of “Pick Up” with Migraine Mowgli, and the sensual liquid of “Summer Nights” with chanteuse Sahala.

Defiant fortitude characterises Dili’s world view, defining the fusion-inflected hip hop of “On A Next Vibe”, the Portrait-produced “One Sec” (featuring a Vibes Masta Murder message of encouragement that summarizes the unique path that Diligent Fingers walks as an artist), the slow groove of “Crooked Teeth” with his mastery of interior rhymes on full display, and the slow conga burn of “No More Second Guessing”. In “Letter to My Younger Self”, Dili completes a song he began thirteen years ago, audibly evident in his first verse’s youthful sounding baritone-in-training. Fender Rhodes and a sizzling high hat build to a soaring chorus by Jurell before his second verse delivers a dose of age-bred wisdom to his younger self, a combination of bad news and hopeful determination, and the effect is stunning. Dili even purveys optimism and brings back Man.Lyk.Ess, Big Gen and Anya to join him for the moody dubby stepper “Sun Beams”.

Not one to let himself be pigeonholed, Dili allows his production to carry the load sans vocals on “Release”, a dnb instrumental with a steppy jump-up vibe underneath wistful, evocative synths. It’s a prime showcase of his uncanny ability to combine seemingly incompatible vibes in delightfully unexpected ways. Likewise, his work on “Got To Be Real” allows Migraine Mowgli, MP Riley, and Donnie Danko to take the vocal spotlight over a modern yet jazzy half-time beat mélange. And “True Vet” delivers a commanding vocal hook over blistering jungle attack that makes everyone understand exactly why Dili was trusted to remix the classic “Chopper” in 2023.

Truly, “The War Within” is an album lover’s album and to listen is as close as one can get to musical empathy. If you’ve ever enjoyed the previous work of Diligent Fingers and his genre defying (and genre defining) label Spynal Records, this piece of his catalogue is essential to understanding the artist, his outlook, and his output.
